Looking for something to do in Saint Petersburg? The Museum of Soviet Arcade Machines is a perfect afternoon of retro cool.
Gordon Bennett (1841-1918) I can't tell you how much I loved this place. The museum's in a large ex-warehouse type space, which some talented folk have filled with a good number of resurrected Soviet machines.
The museum just off the main thoroughfare in the historic centre of Saint Petersburg, and on entry you're given a stack of old 15-kopeck coins for you to use on the forty-odd different games. You're also politely reminded not to take any of the coins away as a souvenir - they remain the only way to keep the machines working.
The staff told me that keeping these relics going isn't easy - and at any time there are always some under maintenance.
Some of the machines are clearly mimicking classic western arcade games, others were just plain weird.
I never quite got the hang of this tank game. I think the idea was to drive around and blow up enemy missile launchers...
Many are drawn to the museum by nostalgia - but it's fun for anyone really - you'll find plenty of young people shooting, driving and blasting their way around too.
